| Character | Description |
|---|---|
| HEDDA GABLER-TESMAN | late 20’s/early 30’s - complex – idealistic but opts for security, then regrets it; jealous, witty, intelligent but wild and impulsive and yet afraid of scandal – as much a problem character as Hamlet! |
| GEORGE TESMAN | early 30’s – scholarly, of happy disposition, kind, honest, but naïve, devoted to all close to him; a major role – not a figure of fun |
| EILERT LOVBORG | early 30’s – very intelligent, ambitious as a serious writer, unstable, passionate, in love with Hedda, dissipated but has style – major role |
| MR BRACK | 40-55 - a judge - sophisticated, elegant, pillar of the community but devious, clandestine, flirtatious, unmarried, conventional, alert, intelligent |
| MRS THEA ELVSTED | 25-30 – attractive, conventional despite having run away from husband; devoted to Lovborg, shy of Hedda, a survivor, a born personal secretary, efficient |
| AUNT JULIA | 60’s – conventional, generous and kind, if a little too motherly, altruistic: smaller part |
| BERTHA | 45-60 – maid; loyal, kind-hearted, ‘countrified’, nervous about Hedda, emotional – minor role |
