SADC Summer Walk - Sunday 22nd June, 2008

Walkers!

A small but gallant group repeated the Headley Heath walk on Sunday 22 June, small only in that we were outnumbered by the dogs, who put us to shame with the pace they kept up. Unlike our previous outing along the route we had on this occasion glorious weather.

The sun shone throughout the day, but a breeze assisted us as we mounted the very few hills to be faced. We had the countryside largely to ourselves, and Surrey looked at its best with spring turning into early summer.

We were reminded throughout of SADC's gallant Chair who set such a splendid pace last time out. We passed the point at which she lost her first trainer, and then the ditch where the second one sank in mud. Finally we reached the pub, and were reminded of Ira's immortal words - "I have never been so glad to see the Cock Inn before". In her absence in Portugal we raised a glass to her and other absent friends and made our way back across the Heath to the car park. There those hoping to dine on the famous bacon and sausage sandwich were disappointed to find the caravan shut "because of high winds". As the caravan has been sinking into the Surrey countryside for the past 10 years the danger from high winds must forever remain a mystery.
